They’ve probably come to most of us at some point or another and it’s always good to read others’ perspectives on this stuff. Soak up as much as you can and take what you can in to the next time you face these challenges in your community.

It reminds me of the membership model here:

First you solve awareness, then value, then trust, then competition.

A big part of this is getting that initial concept right. This is really easy for customer support communities, but tends to be extremely hard for everyone else. So a huge part of this is figuring out the problem, skills, status, or norm that you’re creating with the group in the first place.
